The Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta also known as the Okavango Swamp, in Botswana is the world's largest inland delta.
It would be hard to find a more miraculous spectacle than the Okavango Delta, a wetland oasis in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. This unique ecosystem has always rated as a highlight of every Botswana safari, born of a river flowing from the highlands of Angola a thousand kilometers away - but never finding its way to the sea. The expanse of verdant, unfenced wilderness, which spreads over 16000 square kilometers, waxes and wanes according to the complex rhythm of the river, a Wetland of International Importance, which can be seen from outer space.
Here you will witness Africa’s largest concentration of elephant, and a great variety of wildlife –including aquatic species such as hippo, crocodile, waterfowl, and the specially adapted rare sitatunga and red lechwe. Guided mekoro excursions will take you into clear, lily-covered lagoons and papyrus-fringed waterways: if you’re lucky you will see animals normally associated with the plains – lions, giraffe, even hyena - entering the water and even swimming.
In terms of unexpected beauty, remote location and rich diversity of animal and birdlife all year round, the Okavango Delta is unsurpassed: enquire now and our team will help plan your safari to one of the world’s greatest wild places.
